Sunbury Lodge Black Pearl: Ridden by Carolin Plewa in Germany
Our Business
Anne Smith and her husband, Ross, purchased Sunbury Lodge in 1991. Their aim was to turn Sunbury Lodge into one of Australia's premiere indoor training facilities, and a place to breed competition horses for young riders, prioritizing type and temperament.
Anne and Ross's first foals were the result of cross-bred Percheron and Clydesdale mares being bred with thoroughbred sires. Later on they moved to using Warmblood sires to produce the mild-mannered performance horses for which Sunbury Lodge is now renowned. Sunbury Lodge has become well regarded for its training facilities. Over the years the centre has hosted numerous high-level training clinics and exams for the Equestrian Federation of Australia (EFA), the most notable being in the lead-up to the Sydney Olympics.
The equestrian centre has also welcomed students from all parts of the world, including Ireland, Germany, Belgium, Thailand, Singapore, Sri Lanka and India. Many Australian students have trained at Sunbury Lodge. Numerous secondary colleges throughout Victoria have incorporated Sunbury Lodge into their work experience programs.
But the success of Sunbury Lodge didn't just happen. Years of hard work and dedication to the sport, coupled with an unwavering commitment to excellence in breeding and training has seen Sunbury Lodge blossom in to the world-class facility it is today.
Sunbury Lodge's breeding and training programs have recently been rekindled with the purchase of four beautiful horses from the Isle of Wight farm including Isle of Arlington and Isle of Armadale for future breeding; and the geldings Isle of Munich and Isle of Troy for competition.
Anne Smith trained for two years with Jean Bemelmans in Germany and has competed on Solo II in five European countries, as well as in Australia on Solo II and Carillo. Anne has developed a thorough knowledge of dressage training and specialises in the preparation necessary for the proper development of collection, self-carriage and the Grand Prix movements.
