Sunbury Lodge Black Pearl: Ridden by Carolin Plewa in Germany

Breeding

Anne Smith and her husband, Ross, purchased Sunbury Lodge in 1991. Their aim was to turn Sunbury Lodge into one of Australia's premiere indoor training facilities, and a place to breed competition horses for young riders, prioritizing type and temperament.

Anne and Ross's first foals were the result of cross-bred Percheron and Clydesdale mares being bred with thoroughbred sires. Later on they moved to using Warmblood sires to produce the mild-mannered performance horses for which Sunbury Lodge is now renowned.

Sunbury Lodge has become well regarded for its training facilities. Over the years the centre has hosted numerous high-level training clinics and exams for the Equestrian Federation of Australia (EFA), the most notable being in the lead-up to the Sydney Olympics.

The equestrian centre has also welcomed students from all parts of the world, including Ireland, Germany, Belgium, Thailand, Singapore, Sri Lanka and India. Many Australian students have trained at Sunbury Lodge.  Numerous secondary colleges throughout Victoria have incorporated Sunbury Lodge into their work experience programs.
